Toilet Wisdom

"The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership."

General Colin Luther Powell, United States Army (Ret.)

I don't usually give a damn about quotations. Especially when people plaster them all over their workstations, in meeting rooms or have a new one everyday as an email signature. Quite the ad nauseum actually.

But I find myself thinking about this one lately. Ironically, I first saw this pasted in a toilet many years ago. Sorry GEN Powell, Sir! =))

Some people think no bad news from their subordinates is good news. And everything's fine.

But izzit?

I fear the day their problems stop coming to me. As it is, they are not as forthcoming as before. But first I have to solve problems of my own.

i learned long ago that if there is a problem, the first thing to do is inform the boss! if you try to hide it, or fix it on the quiet, or hope it goes away you will get into bigger sh*t... nowadays, my philosophy is simple, first sign of trouble, tell the boss, set his expectations when and what steps are taken to resolve it and most importantly pull as many people as you can into the loop because if you are going to go down, you want to drag as many people down along with you!!!

the thing wif junior staff, whether young or old, is that they bring their personal problems to work. like it or not. sometimes its hard for them to be professional about it and it affects their performance.

operational work problems I can solve. I am paid to do so. its the stuff outside, although really none of my business, that has to be solved holistically as well for things to really b ok.

when they come to you wif their personal problems, u noe the trust is there.
