"The Wall"

building a career is like running a marathon. you know, its a long term thing. its not a sprint.

and like a marathon, at around the 23rd mile you hit 'the wall'.

i think 4 years is about the average time before i hit my career wall. in my past two jobs, i only lasted four years before getting bored, and restless and going through that period of unhappiness and eventually giving in and quitting rather then staying on and going past that wall and making it to the end.

well, i'm coming up to the wall again. in a few months it would be four years at my present job... i'm already starting to get that familiar feeling. last friday, i feigned sickness to avoid a meeting where i was to give a progress up date for a project i'm leading - only there was no progress since the last meeting.... those are the kind of situations you get into when you hit the wall.

i'm hopin i'll be over this soon and this time i will work hard at getting past that point and going on to finish the race, instead of bailing out.

muffy, any songs about walls you could load up? :-))

when u dun really, really enjoy wat ur doing, this is the feeling u'll get i suppose. it'll be a matter of time even if u switch to something else. some ppl have a higher threshold of pain and so can ride it out or they have things outside of work to balance up their lives.

should hv stuck wif advertising, theatre or flying huh? =)) but we dun always get wat we want.

i hope Wonderwall from OASIS cuts it for u. Liam Gallagher's yelping vocals should get u to the wall sooner than u tink =))

i dun tink it's a matter of whether u like what u r doing, in fact, u might like it in the first place, but the feelings might change in 4 yrs or so... who's to say? it's the same with everything, relationships, career, heck, mayb even cars n houses.

mayb things wil b better if u take some time off and see things from a different perspective, very often when we encounter unhappiness, all our energy n efforts r focused on it that its supposed "failure" makes us feel lousy abt ourselves. but take some time off, smell the roses and rethink.

there is a time when we get too old to afford making rash decisions. but i'm sure u dun nid me to tell u that ;)

been looking around the job boards and classifieds and such.... the biggest problem with being a professional in an obscure, backoffice field is that there isn't much to move into... sigh... LOL

its the looking for phase of life... looking for job, looking for car.... looking for what else?
